1. Catch a Matinee

Catching a matinee is one of the best frugal ways to attack boredom. Going to a movie after 5 PM or 6 PM – depending on where you live – can result in paying as much as $10-$15 for a movie ticket. But if you go earlier in the day, you might be able to see a movie for around $7. Eat at home and skip the snack bar, and you can have a fun afternoon out without breaking the bank.

2. Go to the Zoo

If the weather is good, spend an afternoon at the zoo. You might be able to enter for around $10 per person, and if you look for discounts online, you might find a buy-one-get-one free deal, which is perfect if you have kids or if you're going with a group.

3. Watch a Sports Event

This can be a high school or college game. Tickets are relatively inexpensive, and it's an excellent way to get out of the house and enjoy some fresh air on a Friday or Saturday night. Also, you can look for other local events in your area. Go to a local park and you might be able to catch free sporting events.

4. Go to a Bar

This takes some self control. Have dinner before leaving home to avoid ordering an appetizer or entrée. Once you're at the bar, order one drink and enjoy the entertainment for the night. This might include karaoke, bingo, or watching a game with some of your friends. This is an excellent way to get out of the house and socialize with friends without spending outside your budget.

5. Host a Game Night

Maybe your friends are also interested in saving money. If so, get everyone together and invite them over for game night. You can play classic games, such as Pictionary and Monopoly, or you can host a card night. Ask everyone to bring one snack or a drink.

6. Go Hiking

If you enjoy the great outdoors, research hiking trails near your home or within driving distance. This is an opportunity to explore nature, exercise or get out the house and enjoy a new adventure. Whether you're in the forest or a mountainous region, this is one sport that won't cost a dime.

7. Open Mic Night

Look for bars or clubs that host open mic nights. This can include poetry, singing or any other talent. You don't have to order a lot of food to enjoy the entertainment. Maybe split an entrée with your partner, and order one or two drinks. The goal is to get out the house and have fun, not spend money you don't have.

There's certainly more entertainment options when cash isn't an issue. But realistically, most people have to stick with a budget and limit how much they spend on entertainment. Fortunately, living by a budget doesn't have to stop fun. What are other cheap ways to kill boredom on the weekends?
