1. The Prices on Spices

When was the last time you used saffron in a recipe? Or how about smoked paprika? Whether its something super common like cinnamon or a little less mainstream like mace, spices are front and center in your market.

No doubt you’ve noticed the hefty price tag that comes along with these flavor boosters and it can be a bit startling if you’re not prepared. But there are ways around the sticker shock and it starts with a short walk to a different section of the store. This is one of the best grocery store hacks you'll ever hear.

Do yourself a favor and peruse over to the “international” foods section. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find a wide variety of spices and seasonings for a fraction of what you’ve seen in the baking aisle. Even better, invest in some nice glass or plastic snap top spice jars and go to your local health food store. Often times, that’s where you’ll find spices in bulk and you’ll pay pennies on the dollar to spoon out exactly the amounts you need. Purchasing your spices in bulk at retails chains like BJ’s, Sam’s Club is certainly an option as well, but if you’re not using up your spices before they expire, you risk defeating the purpose of a good buy.

2. The “Little” Numbers Matter Most

And while you’re doing some comparison shopping, start looking at the smaller price tag. That’s the one that’s labeled “price per unit” or “price per ounce.” This is how you REALLY know if the two 20.5 ounce bag of chips for $5.00 is really a better deal than a 32-ounce bag for $4.00. When the numbers are so close, it can be tricky for even the most seasoned mathematician, but by using the “price per” number typically on display on the same tag as the purchase price, you’ll know the answer within a matter of seconds.

Use these two tips the next time you grocery shop and you just might notice a difference in your bottom line!
