They say you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar, and that's true most of the time, but the fact of the matter is that if you're too nice at work, you're not going to get the respect you want, let alone the career. Fostering a good relationship with your colleagues is essential, but being too nice can often backfire. When you're too nice, your coworkers are all too ready to take advantage of you, which can be to the detriment of your job, how well you do it, and, ultimately, your success.

People Constantly Ask You for Favors
One of the signs you’re too nice at work is if people are constantly asking you for favors. It is good to do favors for your coworkers when you can. Everyone needs to be helped out from time to time but if you feel that you are constantly being asked favors, it could be a sign you’re too nice at work. It can be helpful to see if any of these other signs apply to you to help you decide if you need to make some changes.

You do More Work than Others in the Same Position
Do you do more work than others in the same position? That can be a sign you’re too nice at work. You should be doing about the same amount of work as others in the same position you are in. This may ebb and flow but are the scales are always tipped toward you having the heaviest work load? It can be a sign you are being too nice at work.

You Feel Taken Advantage of
Do you feel taken advantage of at work? That can be something that happens if you are overly nice. You want to be kind and be a good team player but you don’t want to give the impression that others can run over you. It might be wise to start thinking about how to set boundaries in your job. People Just Assume You Will do Things
Do people just assume that you will do certain things that aren’t really in your job description? This can cause you to feel resentful. You certainly want to do your job to the best of your abilities. However, you don’t want to find yourself doing someone else’s tasks. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself when you need to do so.
