Back to Basics

If you’re interested in improving your relationship with your boss, it’s crucial to be on top of the basics like showing up on time. This means coming to work on time and ready to work consistently. Sure, things happen sometimes where you can’t avoid being tardy, but make sure you keep that to a minimum. Being late a few times might not seem like a big deal but it can really affect other people’s work. Showing others that you’re dependable and punctual is a big part of the job because it shows you can be trusted.

2

Get Acquainted

In order to improve your relationship with anyone, it’s vital to get to know them and their communication style. You don’t have to stalk their Facebook and snoop on conversations to get to know these things, just be observant! If your communication style is totally different from your boss’s, it can pose some challenges. For instance, let’s say your boss has a communication style where he/she likes the facts and bottom line upfront. If you like to make small talk and frequently update him/her on your progress, it might not be the best way to communicate with him/her. You don’t have to change who you are, just adapt so that you can get things done more efficiently!

3

Anticipate Needs

One of the best things you can do to get along with your boss and co-workers better is to be on top things and anticipate needs. Don’t wait to be told what to do or wait to do something you already know needs to be done. Once you’re at a job long enough, you’ll start seeing patterns of when something needs to be done and you can stay on top of it to make life easier for yourself and others.

4

Look for Ways to Improve

No matter what type of job you have, you can make a difference. Think about ways you can improve the way you perform your job or how things are done. Sometimes it takes someone to just think outside the box and speak up! Many companies have procedures that are very old and maybe you have fresh take on how to do things that can cut costs, improve quality or increase efficiency. Who wouldn’t appreciate that?!

5

Go the Extra Mile

The next time you’re on the job performing your job tasks, why not go the extra mile? Almost everyone does the bare minimum when they’re at work, but that’s not the way to impress anyone! Occasionally going above and beyond the call of duty can really help others out and help you stand out in a positive way. Although this won’t directly help improve your relationship with your boss, it will get you on the right track to doing so!

Ask for Feedback

Most companies have some sort of periodic performance review, but take it a step further and follow up on recommendations and ask for feedback on your progress. Being able to take constructive criticism and working on improving your job performance are huge. This shows you care about your job and it’s the only way to get to know what your boss thinks about your performance.

7

Avoid Excuses

No one likes hearing excuses. I think we’ve all been in a position where we depended on someone to do something and they didn’t follow through, and the last thing we want to hear is an excuse. If you know you can’t finish something, ask for help early on. Your boss and co-workers would much rather have you asking for help than hearing an excuse after a deadline has passed!

8

Stay Positive

Relationships take time and work. If you and your boss have had disagreements in the past, don’t hold a grudge. Leave the past in the past and work on improving your relationship now. Things might not always go how we’d like, but having a good attitude can make a big difference. Besides, there are way too many Negative Nancys in the workplace already!

Improving your relationship with anyone takes some time, so don’t be discouraged! Work relationships can be complicated sometimes, but if you focus on your performance and improving things, your boss is sure to take notice! Do you have any tips on improving your relationship with your boss?
