Save Money on Food, save money everywhere else – it's as simple as that. Food is ridiculously expensive, and although you don't have to go coupon crazy, buying things you don't need just to save money, there are still play of ways to save money on food. They're definitely worth looking into, and surprisingly easy to employ. If you want to save money on food, drinks, and general grocery shopping, I have a ton of great ideas for you!

1

Make a Budget

First and foremost, you have to make a budget. That's how you begin to save money on food. Actually, that's how you begin saving money on everything. See what you have coming in, what's going out, where it's going, and what you can trim – including your shopping budget.

2

Use Coupons

Coupons really do help you save – a lot. You do not have to go all Extreme Coupons and create a bunker filled with non-perishable foods. Rather, find coupons for the food items you need, the ones you buy a lot, and even the ones you like but never buy because they're usually too expensive.

3

Try off Brands

Off brands are always cheaper, and they're essential to save money on food. In general, they're completely the same as the name brands. That's not always true, but that's okay. You may not like generic cereal or mac and cheese (I'm glaring in the general direction of the Better-but-Pickier Half here), but most things are fine and they'll save you a pretty penny.

4

Buy Some Things in Bulk

If you eat a lot of cereal, ramen, spaghetti, et cetera, it can pay to buy in bulk. Don't buy it if you think it'll go to waste, and actually calculate to see if you'll be saving anything in the long run. If the numbers check out, though, this is a great idea.

5

Make a Weekly Menu

Knowing what you want to make each week is a great way to save money on food. This is primarily because you can buy enough for two to three weeks, you won't run out, you won't need to run out to the store a dozen times, and you won't end up needing extras. You can even go a little farther and plan for a month.

6

Always Write a List

Never, ever go to the store without a list, period. Buy only the items on your list. Unless it's something you forgot, like milk or eggs, then forget about it. If you didn't need it at home, you don't need it at the store. And avoid those impulse buys!

7

Look for Sales

Sales are a great way to save money on food. Again, only buy the things you know you'll use. Soup might be on sale, but if you don't eat it, you don't need it. Don't buy things just because you can save money on them.

8

Make It from Scratch

Scrapping recipes, making things from scratch, and using your leftovers saves a lot of money too. Try to get your cupboards bare between shopping trips. That way you don't end up with a lot of extras you won't be using. Besides that, it's often cheaper to make it yourself than to buy it premade.

As you can see, it's not hard to save money on food. It takes discipline, sure, and it can be hard to keep up with a budget, but when you see just how much money you've saved, you'll be glad. When you save money on food, you have extra to spend elsewhere – or to save, which is even better. How do you save money on food?
