Find out How to save Money when You're Moving ...

By Teresa

Moving can be an expensive and strenuous process, but thankfully, there are tons of ways to save money when moving that will make the entire process so much easier! Whether you’re looking for ways to save money while furnishing your new place, or simply looking for money-saving tips for the actual move, you’ll find them on this list of ways to save money when moving.

1 Ask around

When I moved, I was amazed at the amount of furniture and other necessary items I found just by asking around. This is currently one of my favorite ways to save money when moving because I had such great luck with it. One of my cousins was trying to get rid of a vintage, midcentury dresser at a yard sale, but she gave it to me for free. I found an unused, extra set of silverware in my mom’s basement, as well as most of the smaller décor pieces for my place. You’d be surprised at the amount of stuff that people are just dying to get rid of!

Frequently asked questions

2 Ikea is Your Best Friend

If you’re completely starting from scratch in the furniture department, look at Ikea furniture first. It may be a pain to put together, but you would be surprised at the deals you’ll find. You may even be able to furnish your entire home for the cost of a bed frame from other furniture stores, because that’s how great their prices are.

3 Invest in Spray Paint

In my opinion, the greatest part about Ikea furniture is just how customizable it is. A lot of it starts out as unfinished wood, which makes it easy to paint it any color you want. However, even Ikea furniture that’s already finished with certain colors is easy to spray paint and customize to your own preferences. With prices as cheap as they are, you can’t feel bad about painting them a different color!

4 Set a Strict Budget for Yourself

The stricter you are with the budget, the more creative you’ll become when it comes to furnishing your place. If you don’t have room for something in your budget, either save up until you can afford it or just keep asking people until you find someone who has what you’re looking for.

5 Only Shop from the Clearance Section

When I was moving recently, the clearance section at Target became my best friend. I found my bowls and dishes for nearly 20% of the original price, and only spent around $10 on my entire sheet set. If you search hard enough, you’d be surprised at the prices you’ll find on pieces you absolutely love!

6 Start Extreme Couponing

Okay, maybe you don’t have to start extreme couponing, but a little bit of couponing will save you a lot of money. Stores like Hobby Lobby always have a ton of different coupons and sales going on that will help you decorate your place quickly and on a small budget. Whether you’re looking for picture frames or knick-knacks, you can find something that won’t break the bank.

7 Use What You Have to Move

You don’t need to spend a fortune to move. Don’t invest in a ton of different boxes and other items to move. Use cardboard boxes, or even trash bags, that you have on-hand. If you’re moving somewhere nearby, don’t invest in a U-Haul, ask your friends or family with big trucks to help transport the big stuff, like a sofa or bed, and then transport the smaller items in your own car. It will save you so much money in the long run!
