1. Strengths

One of the surefire ways to get that promotion this year is to make your strengths clear to those around you. Be careful with this one though, you don't want to come across as arrogant. But make it clear to senior staff where your strengths lie.

2. Confidence

Ever heard of the phrase 'fake it 'til you make it'? Well, you could apply this rule here. You need to show you're confident and you need to feel confident in yourself and what you do. Again, there's a thin line between confidence and arrogance, but showing that you're competent and able to take on any challenge will show that you're ready for bigger things. Developing the habits of highly confident women can help you project the right mix of capability and assurance in the office.

3. Awareness

Be aware of things going on around you. This means keeping an eye out for training opportunities and any other positions which may be advertised in your workplace. If you work for a big organisation it may be a little more impersonal, with jobs being advertised on the intranet. It's wise to be aware and speak to those around you to see what may be on the promotional horizon, which is highly recommended by professional networks like the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).

4. Do Your Best

Even though you're aching for that next step up the rung of the career ladder, keep doing the best you can in your current position. In addition to doing your best, make sure you show your strengths to senior staff. This means ensuring that you're always punctual and dressed smartly, and that you're reliable. Be willing to go the extra mile and take on extra tasks. This shows you're committed and thirsty for more. Show that you have the hunger and those above are sure to see. Utilizing essential productivity tips can help you manage your time and maintain high-quality output.

To demonstrate your commitment and reliability daily, focus on these habits:

  • Be consistently punctual and prepared for every meeting.
  • Dress professionally and fit the workplace culture.
  • Proactively ask for feedback on your performance.

5. Don't Clock Watch

Who would want to promote someone who arrives dead on time at the start of their shift and leaves as soon as the time comes to go and not a minute later? This doesn't scream commitment, so be prepared to work beyond the set hours.

6. Be Happy

Be a positive presence in the workplace. People will like you and let's face it, positivity is infectious. You're more likely to be noticed as someone who undertakes their tasks with enthusiasm and rigour, and not someone who is scowling at every job they're given. Indeed, studies from institutions like the Greater Good Science Center show that positivity can significantly boost performance and build stronger workplace relationships.

7. Be Proactive

Be proactive when it comes to sharing your ideas with the powers that be. If you notice that there is a system that isn't working quite as well as it should, use your problem solving skills and initiative to come up with a better way. This will show that you care about the organisation and are actively seeking ways of making it better, showcasing your problem-solving skills and initiative. Learning ways to be more assertive at work will ensure your suggestions are heard and valued. Furthermore, the Harvard Business Review emphasizes that proactivity is a top quality managers look for in promotion candidates.

8. Get Involved

If there are extra meetings or focus groups going on, get involved. This will show that you're committed and keen to learn more and share ideas. If there are clubs and social events, this is another way to be seen and heard.

9. Shine Bright

In meetings and conferences, show your enthusiasm. I'm not saying you should keep putting your hand up and it's not wise to say something just for the sake of saying something. But if you have a valid contribution, don't feel afraid to make your voice heard and show your confidence.

These are just a few ways to make that dream promotion a reality. Do you have any other hints and tips on getting that promotion?
