1

Not Speaking to Your Resume

One of the easiest ways to ruin a job interview is by not speaking to your resume. A lot of job seekers tend to oversell their experience and their skills or qualifications on their resume. For example, if you don’t have any accomplishments that can support those skills that you mentioned in your resume, the interviewer might wonder if you are telling the truth on your resume.

2

Arriving Late

Time equals money, so if you’re going to a job interview, make sure you don’t arrive late because this mistake can cost you the job. Show some respect and don’t waste the interviewer's time. Most interviewers assume that you’re on your best behavior while interviewing, so if you’re late, they will think that you will be unreliable in your job too.

3

Being Unprepared

If you want to ace an interview and land that dream job, then do your homework first. Don’t ask questions about that company that could have been answered if you would have just done a little bit of research. Show enthusiasm and know everything there is to know about the company and about the position that you hope to obtain.

4

Being Rude

Being rude to the receptionist or even to the interviewer will definitely cost you the chance of getting the job. Make sure that you are polite with everyone you encounter in the company, not only with the interviewer. A lot of employers will ask the receptionist what they think of you, so don’t be rude or arrogant if you want to get the job.

5

Using Cliché Phrases

Another common mistake most job seekers make during an interview is using a lot of cliché phrases and buzzwords. Of course, all managers want to hire people who are passionate about their work and who are team players but instead of telling the interviewer these things, you could explain to them what makes you love your profession so much.

Appearing over-Confident

Even if it’s important to sell yourself to the interviewer, try not to overcompensate when you explain your skills, your qualifications or your experience. Be confident, have faith in your abilities and use examples from your past experience to show them that you are the best candidate for the position.

7

Dressing Inappropriately

You should keep in mind that your appearance doesn’t mean only what you are wearing but also, how you groom yourself. Most employers will not be impressed by a sloppy appearance. Try to dress and look according to that job’s expectations. This way, you will make a good impression and you will maximize your chances of getting the job.

If you want to ace that interview, make sure you are a good listener, take the interview seriously, show enthusiasm and give specific examples in response to questions. Do you know any other easy ways to ruin a job interview? Please tell us about them in the comments section!
